My 8-year old son was recently diagnosed with eczema on his elbows and arms. He is pretty itchy. Can you suggest any aromatherapy oils to help? (He is very Vata, if you are familiar with Ayurveda at all).
Thanks,

ANSWER:
Hi Emily, thanks for your question. It is great that you are considering a natural alternative to help your son's eczema.
Vata skin is characterised by dryness, flaking, cracking, thinness, coldness, and roughness. It may be helped by Vata-reducing essential oils such as roman chamomile (I have used this on a rash that appeared on my wrist and the itch stopped INSTANTLY on application of one drop of roman chamomile), clary sage, geranium, lavender, rose, rosewood, sandalwood and vetiver.
A book that may interest you is called "Ayurveda and Aromatherapy" and is available from My Book Store. I find it an excellent reference book combining both sciences, with self-diagnosis questionnaires, recipes and essential oils for common problems.
The traditional essential oils for eczema are lavender, roman chamomile, myrrh, geranium and rosewood. There are a few that match your son's Vata type.
I must warn that my answers ONLY apply to the therapeutic grade essential oils I use. Adulterated, cut and pesticide containing oil can do more damage to the skin. The roman chamomile I used above was therapeutic grade, unadulterated, uncut, free of chemicals, pesticides and heavy metals from planting of the seed to bottle.
If you would like to order therapeutic grade essential oils, go to My Store. Please contact me if you need help with ordering.
I hope you find this helpful and that your son recovers quickly.
Best Wishes
